Edge™ and Centricollation™

Edge Technology is a non-denaturing front-end sample fractionation and separation methodology, comprising a stepwise extraction of a particle mixture using extracting media of increasing densities. It can be enhanced and accelerated by various external forces, such as centrifugal, magnetic, electrical force, etc. Edge technology is compatible with all down stream analyses such as gel electrophoresis, western blot, HPLC, mass spectrometry, and microarrays. When Edge technology is enhanced by centrifugal force, it is termed Centricollation. Centricollation (cen’-tri-col-la-tion) uses centrifugal force for the rapid, ordered extraction of substances with specific characteristics, providing breakthrough, enabling separations. Edge 200 is an automated, easy-to-use, bench-top air-driven centricollation system, specifically designed to implement the Edge technology. Using “house air”, or an external compressor, the CentriCol150™ rotor can reach speeds of 95,000-100,000 RPM in less than a minute, providing 120,000 to 150,000 x g force. The system provides well defined, non-denaturing, and reproducible fractionation of complex biological samples by their densities, maintaining the integrity of the biological sample and biological context necessary for further analysis and biomarker discovery.

 An integral component of the Edge 200 Separation Systems is the AirPrep™ 205 unit (APU) which provides a unique combination of controlled pre-dried and low-temperature air. Throughout each extraction step, the APU conditions the inlet air to assure a clean, dry and temperature-controlled environment. 

Edge 200 Separation System’s benefits:

  • Fractionation, enrichment and concentration in a single process.
  • Fractionation conditions are non-denaturing and the sample integrity is well preserved.
  • Using GradiSpec extraction media assures the density at each step is pre-defined.
  • The recovery yield is > 90%.
  • Starting sample volume can be 50 µl to 3.0 ml.
  • Extraction volume is flexible, user-defined, and can be as low as 100 µl.
  • Each extraction step takes about 5 to 6 minutes.
  • Targeted extraction may start at any density step of interest without going through the whole process.


GradiSpec™ line of fixed density extraction media provides robust, well-defined fractionations. These reagents facilitate the use oreagent.jpgf the Edge 200 and are available in kits which:

  • contain highly accurate, defined sucrose concentrations in buffered solutions
  • are sterilized and are DNase, RNase and pyrogen free 
  • have extended shelf lifetimes and are stable at room temperature 
  • provide easy instructions for making additional highly accurate density solutions from solutions provided

GradiSpec Extract Media are available:

  • GradiSpec Discovery Reagent Kit:
    12 bottles of sterile buffered sucrose solution (10 ml/bottle), 8.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60% (w/w)
  • GradiSpec Light Reagent Kit:
    7 bottles of sterile buffered sucrose (10ml/bottle), 8.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35% (w/w)
  • GradiSpec Heavy Reagent Kit:
    7 bottles of sterile buffered sucrose (10ml/bottle), 8.5, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60% (w/w)
  • Gradispec 8.5 Reagent Kit:
    6 Bottles of 8.5% Sucrose (10 ml per bottle)
  • Gradispec 10 Reagent Kit:
    6 Bottles of 10% Sucrose (10 ml per bottle)

ble liners are designed to protect the sample from contacting the rotor’s metal surface and to eliminate sample cross-contamination for cost effective single sample use.
